  Learn to Draw: A Comprehensive Introduction to Drawing Foundations and Style with Gary Hernandez

  
  

  You'll be guided by a professional artist who will work with you individually to develop the skills that will take your drawings to the next level.

  Gary is an internationally recognized, award-winning artist.  He received his training from the Houston Museum of Fine Arts School of Art.

  Still Life Group is an open studio, no-instruction event.  Once each month, Terri Harris facilitates an opportunity for artists to practice their art-from-life skills.  All levels of skill are welcome, and any medium can be used.  

  The composition and lighting is a collaborative effort in which we all learn with and from each other.  You are encouraged to bring items that can be added to the still life.  One or two setups, depending on the number of attendees, are available so that all artists can have a good viewpoint.

You can use your pencils to create works as rich and nuanced as any oil painting.  Award-winning, world-renowned artist, Jesse Lane, guides you step by step, sharing his signature style for creating nuanced skin tones, dynamic lighting, and compelling composition.   Everyone works on the same portrait as Jesse gives detailed demos and works with students one-on-one.

  The workshop includes:

  • Large-Screen Demos: A video camera on Jesse’s drawing board is projected to a screen so students can easily follow along.

  • One-on-One Instruction: Jesse visits each participant, offering encouragement, answering questions, and explaining technique.

  • High-quality instructional materials, including a reference photo, a glossy tutorial booklet, and the image outlined on drawing paper.

  Since colored pencil is a very slow medium, students will not complete the portrait in this workshop. Students learn the skills to complete the portrait on their own with the detailed, step-by-step workbook.  Take your art to the next level in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere!

  
  

  Jesse's beautiful portraits and figurative pieces have appeared in numerous publications.  Among his many honors is the world's top award for colored pencil from the Colored Pencil Society of America.  Jesse grew up in The Woodlands and earned a degree in Visualization from Texas A&M.  He teaches workshops around the nation and online.  Jesse's work can be seen and purchased from the gallery that represents him: RJD Gallery in Romeo, MI.  He lives in The Woodlands with his wife, Kinsey, also a talented artist, and their two whippets.

  Display your art in the Crighton Theatre lobby during the month of April 2025.  Family friendly art that goes with the theme of "Shakespeare" or "Love" is eligible.  Sold art must remain until the end of the exhibit.

  Take-In is Sunday, March 30, 2025 from 5:00pm to 6:00pm.     Deadline to register is 6:00pm on Friday, March 28.  This Exhibition will be on display in the Crighton Theatre lobby during the production of "Shakespeare In Love".

  Art will need to be picked up on April 20th between 5:00pm and 7:00pm.

  
  

  
  

  Waiver & Donation Agreement: By paying the registration fees, artist agrees to the following:  release CAL and its representatives from any and all claims of damage, theft of any artwork/item on exhibit at the gallery; has read and agreed to the guidelines set forth in the CAL gallery policies How to show in the Gallery (which includes artwork rules); entry up to 36" wide.  2D art is not to exceed 36 inches in width, 72 inches in height, and maximum weight is 30 pounds.  3D art is not to exceed 30 inches in depth by 30 inches wide and 48 inches high and maximum weight is 40 lbs.  3D art must fit on shelves provided by the Creighton.  Artist agrees that CAL will receive a donation for each piece sold during its exhibition in the theatre at 20% of the purchase price. Artist will be paid for sold piece(s) within two (2) weeks after the exhibit closes, less the 20% donation amount. CAL will collect sales tax on all sales in the Gallery.  Please Note:  CAL is required to file with the IRS an information return (1099) for each person to whom CAL pays during the tax year at least $600 in sales proceeds and/or prizes and awards.  CAL reserves the right to withhold payment of such amounts unless the recipient provides the required taxpayer identification information through a completed W-9.

  Artist agrees to follow and adhere to all CAL guidelines, procedures, and By-Laws.  Failure to do so may result in removal of membership.

  Any unclaimed artwork/item left after the exhibit take-out date will be removed from the exhibition site and donated/disposed of IF NOT PICKED UP WITHIN 30 DAYS.

  There shall be no soliciting, fundraising, or promoting any organization or group other than CAL or organizations or groups that CAL is a member of.

  Sign up to be one of the "Artists In Action".  Each month on the First Friday of the month the gallery is open late for the downtown Conroe event "Sip and Shop".  As an Artist In Action you will be working on a current project in the gallery for the general public to view.  Any art that you can work on in the gallery is eligible (sculpting, card and jewelry making, painting, etc). This monthly event is limited to 5 artists each month.  Artist must be a CAL member and provide all their own supplies/equipment and clean up when finished.  All sales will go through the CAL system with 20% going to CAL. 

  If you are able to allow people to get hands on with your media of choice that is wonderful.  People are very interested when it comes to artistic creation.

  The goal is to get more visitors in the gallery, sell more of your work and get to know your fellows CAL member in a fun and creative way.

  This popular, one-day workshop with Ken Roy will focus on the introduction and demonstration of three practical, functional approaches to sketching the figure using personal graphic language, proportion, and landmarks of the body to establish within three to five minutes a line of action, gesture, the point of balance, and the integration of the major masses of the body.  This workshop is for all experience levels, ages 18 and over.  Please note: Anatomically correct illustrations of the human body will be referenced during the workshop.  The model will wear form-fitting clothing.

  Supply list

  Paper: Newsprint, rough or smooth, 12" x 18" or 18" x 24". Pad of 50 sheets. Drawing boards and easels, both floor and table models, will be available if you choose to use them.

  Measuring tool: your drawing implement, a chopstick, or a knitting needle will work fine.

  Drawing implement: your preference of charcoal pencil (2B of 4B), Nitram Fine Art Charcoal or similar product (HB or B),  willow charcoal, pastel pencil or stick (hard), or Cretacolor lead holder, with either sanguine oil or Nero drawing leads. A marker is not a good choice because it will bleed through the paper, and this will make the reverse side unfit for drawing.

  “This painting is a study I did to try a different approach starting a painting and color application under the mentorship of Cornelia Hernes, the starting process is called “reduction” and consists in start with a very dark underpainting and slowly revealing the lights until the image is completed, then colors are applied in layers keeping the whole structure of the painting since the very beginning.”

  For each $10 donation one ticket will be entered into the raffle.  The winning ticket will be drawn on May 10th at the Artist Reception.  You do not have to be present to win.  Support the arts and win a beautiful piece of art.  Raffle tickets may be purchased on-line or in the gallery at 127 Simonton Street, Conroe, where you can see the piece in person.

  2025 STUDENT AWARDS SHOW

  Conroe Art League will award more than $13,000 at the Student Awards Show scheduled for Saturday, May 10th, from 6:00 to 8 PM. As many as eighteen monetary awards may be awarded in the show category. 
  

  In addition to the open show, there will be a $500 award for the Adrianne Gerlach Memorial Art Scholarship for Best Western/Wildlife and an award in the amount of $300 for the Sherry Wagner Memorial Award for the theme Forever Cats.  

  A student does not have to be present to win. (But it would be nice!)

  A student may win only one Student Award, but a student winning a Student Award may also win either the Adrianne Gerlach Memorial Scholarship or the Sherry Wagner Memorial Award. Conversely a student who wins either the Adrianne Gerlach or Sherry Wagner award is also eligible to win a Student Award. For example, the art winning the Adrianne Gerlach Award ($500) could also be awarded 1st place and $3,000.00 in the Student Awards.

  The eligibility of a student is defined as a high school senior (the student does not have to be formally enrolled in an art class), who is attending a Montgomery County public, private or home school. 

  Take-in of the art will be at the art league on Friday, May 9th, from 1p.m. to 5p.m. Artwork must be delivered with a completed registration.  You may print your registration or download the form here.  Student Show Registration 2025.pdf.  Our preference is that you register on-line.

  More information about the awards and the reception will be announced as we get closer to the reception.

  This BRAND NEW 3-day workshop is debuting at CAL!  It  will focus on painting from direct observation.  Each day, the class will explore a different subject.

         
  

  Day 1 - the still life 

  Day 2 - the figure from a live model

  Day 3 - the portrait sketch from a live model

  By emphasizing accuracy in drawing, values, edges, texture, and color, students will learn to paint alla prima (all at once), with dynamic brushwork and texture, achieving energetic and engaging paintings.  All skill levels are welcome, even if you've never painted from life before.  While Patrick will be demonstrating in oil paint, acrylics and pastels are also welcome.

  Class size is limited to 14,  so that each student can receive the maximum amount of interaction with the instructor.  Patrick's CAL workshops ALWAYS fill up, so register quickly.  Patrick will send a list of suggested supplies after you register.

  Join Argentinian artist Carolina Dalmas for an engaging and liberating artistic experience where you'll harness the power of spontaneity and intention to create compelling pastel artworks. This workshop offers both structured learning and creative freedom, ensuring a rewarding journey into the world of soft pastels.

  During this workshop, we will paint a still life "alla prima" (completing it in one session).  In this way, you will achieve freshness and joy. Instruction will cover composition and lighting of a still life, shapes, value, edges, color harmony, and movement.  

  Carolina creates art with a deep connection to nature.  She encourages her students to observe the world as if they are seeing it for the first time.  Acrylics and pastels are her favorite mediums. Recently, one of her pastel still lifes was awarded first place in the Pastel 100 Competition, hosted by Pastel Journal.
