On Thursday, March 7th, we unexpectedly lost a cherished friend, Ed Gorman. Ed had been a long time CAL member with a generous volunteer spirit.
In honor of Ed and to commemorate his memory, CAL will be hosting a slideshow tribute following the April 6th general meeting, at around 4:30 pm. We extend an invitation to all who wish to attend and celebrate Ed's life with us.

CAL received 643 applications from all across the U. S. as well as from Canada, Italy, and Mexico. Juror Patrick Saunders has selected from all entries for exhibit in The Madeley Fine Art Gallery this month. $5500 will be awarded to the winners. Winners will be announced at the reception on March 23, 2024, and the public is invited.

Conroe Art League will award $11,000 at the 2024 Student Awards art competition scheduled for Saturday, May 4, from 6 to 8 PM. There also will be a $500 award for the Adrianne Gerlach Memorial Art Scholarship for the Best Western/Wildlife Art, and a $300 award for the Sherry Wagner Memorial Award for the theme “Forever Cats.”
- The student does not have to be present to win. (But it would be nice!)
- The student does not have to pay a fee to enter .
- Student must enter a piece of original art, and no more than two. Size requirements are on the registration form.

- Bring the art and registration form to the Conroe Art League at 127 Simonton Street, Conroe, on Friday, May 3, between the hours of 1 and 5 PM.

COURTYARD SCULPTURE PROGRAM
|
The second quarter sculpture show begins in April. Your sculpture must be at least 24" tall, able to withstand outdoor weather, and not present a danger of any kind. There is no fee but you must work one docent shift. To propose a piece contact Bob Heintzelman at showsandexhibits@conroeartleague.com. You can read about the program here and the registration information is included on the Take-in/Out page. The sculptures currently on display are: Metal Ace by Claire Lewoczko, Running Man Tribute by Randall Cade, and Watchtower Series #3 by Mark Frary.

ARTIST IN ACTION - IN GALLERY
|
To participate, artists must be a CAL member and provide all their own supplies/equipment and clean up when finished. Artists are expected to be working on their art in the gallery from 5:00 to 7:00 and may bring samples of their art for sale. All sales go through the CAL system with 20% going to CAL.

ARTIST IN ACTION - IN PLEIN AIR
|
|
|
On location painting sessions add a special, fresh quality to these paintings and the time spent painting outdoors is cherished by the AIA members who participate. There is always room anyone who would like to join us. The next outing will be in April with a location to be determined.

MONTHLY GENERAL MEETING
The next general meeting will be held on Saturday, April 6th, at 4:00 pm.

The April demo artist is Cynthia Reid. She will be showing the art of paper weaving using different kinds of paper using stripes, warps and wefts, and window cuts. She will be holding a workshop in April too.
|
|

Gary J. Hernandez is an internationally recognized, award winning artist. He received training from the Houston Museum of Fine Arts School of Art. In 1986 he sold his graphics design firm to pursue a full-time career as a professional artist.
Exhibiting extensively in the Houston area, his art has also been showcased in SOHO, New York/ Santa Fe, New Mexico/ Chicago, Illinois/ Cape Cod, Massachusetts/ Scottsdale, Arizona/ Fairfield, Connecticut/ Topeka, Kansas/ Naples, Florida/ Springfield, Massachusetts as well as the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston. He owns and operates the Gary J. Hernandez Studio and Gallery of Fine Art. Additionally, he is the owner and Principle Instructor of The Gary J. Hernandez School of Fine Art.
He specializes in representational art with an emphasis on the human figure. He was a finalist in The Artist's Magazine International Art Competition, an Award of Excellence winner in the Manhattan Arts Magazine Competition, finalist in Hunting Art Prize 2015, 2012 and 2008, awarded Honorable Mention for Artistic Excellence at Salon International 2006 & 2011 and Jury's Top Fifty at Salon International 2008, 2009 & 2011. Hernandez was profiled in the Manhattan Arts Magazine and his artwork has been published in North Light Books "The Best of Flower Painting" and "The Best of Portrait Painting". Most recently he was published in International Artist Magazine October/November 2010 Issue #75 and Southwest Art Magazine's January 2012 issue "Artist To Watch / Editor's Choice for Up-and-Coming Talent".
Mr. Hernandez is an Associate Member of the Oil Painters of America and the International Guild of Realism. He has served as President of the Art League of Houston and as Board Member of the Visual Arts Alliance and the Watercolor Art Society/Houston. Currently he is represented by Jack Meier Gallery / Houston, Texas.

The Madeley Fine Art Gallery is a sponsor of the Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival held on April 12, 13 and 14, 2024. Having a presence at the festival will allow us to showcase details about what we have to offer the surrounding communities. We will be looking for volunteers to cover shifts working in the tent giving out information about CAL and the gallery. Those interested should contact the Gallery Manager. A new benefit to our CAL members is the addition of Studio 127. Located on the second floor of the gallery, it will offer members the equipment and setup for photographing, or painting from life, still life arrangements. Studio 127 can be used by 2D and 3D artists that want to photograph their pieces. Reserve the studio for yourself, or for yourself and a member friend to work together.
